McCall's 8084 - Tie-Front Midi Dress!

McCall's 8084 - Tie-Front Dress - Erica Bunker DIY Style!
I love tie-front dresses. Every time I see a pattern with that detail, I'm drawn to it. You can see other garments with tie-front details here.

I was inspired by this style of dress from the fabulous designer Johanna Ortiz. She creates a lot of tie-front styles in bold, audacious prints.

McCall's 8084 really fit the bill. Well... kinda sorta. You know I had to make a few modifications to make it more "me".

I cut the pattern out in a size 14. I knew I would need to add about an inch of length and make a one inch FBA.

The FBA gave me a bust dart, which also took out a lot of the extra "under boob" fabric.

The part of this pattern that I never liked was all of the fabric that draped onto the waistline. On a frame like mine, that would just make me look boxy.

My fabric is Mood Exclusive Amorphous Amalgamation Stretch Cotton from Mood Fabrics.com. A fabric this crisp needed some shaping, so that dart really helped.

For the sleeves, I drew the elastic a little tighter. I wanted to created a puffed, balloon sleeve.

I made my normal swayback adjustment on the back bodice. I made a full seat adjustment on the back skirt. And I added side slits because I just simply like them.

I really like this dress. And I hope I get around to make it again in a solid color.

  1. The last two times I've received your blog posts by email, the pics are so large that I can't find the text. I don't know why this is happening but maybe you've changed something. Great dress, I like that print and your changes really make it work for you even better.

    1. Connie, like I told you in the previous post when you left this SAME comment... I have no control over the email format you’re receiving. My blog formatting hasn’t change. Your tone, as if you’re not receiving goods or services that you’ve paid money for, is pretty audacious. I’m sharing on my own dime and my own time. If you find the emails irritating, then unsubscribe.

  2. Thanks for sharing Erica. Do you have sources I can learn full seat adjustment?

    1. I use Sandra Betzina's method from the book "Fast Fit". On a lot of these posts, I have pictures of the pattern pieces where I made the adjustment.
