New Look 6697 | Merry Christmas!

11:30 PM

So, here is my Christmas dress! I wanted something easy to wear; a shade of red; a little bit shiny and wearable for any other time of the year. And I found this fabric: Tango Red Jersey Knit with Square Sequin Patches.
In all honesty, I don't have a lot of patterns that would work with a knit like this. But I've had this pattern -- New Look 6697 (out of print) for the last 10 years and never got around to making it. I went through a phase where I was seeing so many wrap and wrap-style dresses that I just hated them. And I'm just know getting to the point where I can revisit the possibility of this style.
I cut view A in the size 14 and lengthened the bodice by one inch and I also lengthened the sleeves by an inch.
The fabric is a rayon/poly knit and even though the description says it's translucent, it's a lot heavier than I thought. Meaning that this dress isn't lined, nor did I feel the need to have to wear a slip.
The neckline of the bodice is finished with a facing. I used the selvage edge of the fabric because it was pretty wide and also has no sequin.
It's such a clean finish and also, comfortable on the inside with no scratchy sequin.
I've never been the biggest fan of self-belts, so I omitted this one. I used a belt that is a perfect shade match. And I can also pair the dress with a lighter or darker colored belt as well.
It goes without saying that I have a newfound love wrap-style dresses. I love how simple they are and how easy they are to sew. And most importantly, how flattering they are. So don't be surprised if you see a few more of these styles popping up in the near future.

  8. Hello, did you have difficulty sewing with this fabric? I have a similar fabric that I got from Mood Fabrics but in sewing I find the fabric gets the needle gummy - - have you encountered this challenge before? Needless to say it was challenging and its in the back of my closet for now. Rosalia
