'Tis the season to be sparkling!  What's the holiday season with sparkle and shine?  I'll tell you:  dull!  Don't be dull, add some sequins to your holiday (and beyond) wardrobe.

My latest addition was inspired by this gorgeous black and silver abstract baby sequins fabric from Mood Fabrics.

When I fell head over heels in love with this fabric, I knew I needed a simple design that would let this fabric shine (pun intended) and let it be the star.  I needed a design that has a limited amount of seams, darts, pleats, pockets and set-in sleeves.  This dress is a blouson-style with an overall looser fit.  It was perfect since this fabric is non-stretch and should be treated like a woven.

I decided to cut this fabric cross grain.  I liked the way the pattern on the fabric fell when lying that way.  When cutting sequin fabric, I would recommend cutting on a single layer and using a rotary cutter.  I say a rotary cutter because the blades are disposable and can easily be replaced with a fresh one.  If you cut with scissors, my suggestion would be to use a pair that are not used to cut fabric.

This ridiculously easy pattern (Vogue 8961) was a breeze to sew.    I made it straight out of the envelope with very few alterations or modifications.  I only added about three inches to the skirt.  My recommendation while sewing sequins is to use new and sharp needles.

My favorite part are the sleeves.  I love that they are elasticized and ruched.

And since I cut the fabric on the cross grain, I was able to just trim around the mesh in the selvage area and use the print design instead of worrying about hemming.

And while pressing, always press on the wrong side using your pressing cloth.  Because steam and moisture could damaged the sequins.

Why is it that your dresses always look so much better than the ones on the site? This is absolutely stunning. I'm not much for shiny, but this makes me want one!

  27. If you don't mind my asking... on the previous posting you mentioned being 5'9" - is that without heels? And then you wear heels? I'm asking because I am exactly that height with bare feet, and I've always felt a bit awkward wearing heels, I supposed because hubby is my height (perhaps a half inch shorter?) so heels accentuate that issue. I didn't know if that was a problem you face, or your hubby is 6' 2" LOL!

You comment about the midi needing to be worn with heels just struck me.... since I have always tended to not wear them much at all. Perhaps a good thing.. I tried on 5" heels just for laughs and about broke my ankle!

    1. I've been this height since I was around 13 or 14 years old. And I've been wearing heels for that long too. And yes... that's 5'9.75" barefoot. And no, my husband is not 6'2". His height has no bearing on my heel wearing. I'm confident and he's secure!

Erica you look stunning. Perfect fun party dress. Can I ask did you remove sequins from seam allowances or just stitch straight over them? Love the photos too!

  29. No ma'am. Ain't nobody got time for that! These are BABY sequins. I'd still be trying to remove those things! Thanks sewmanju

    1. How interesting... I assumed that since you didn't line it that you had removed the sequins from the seam allowance. I tell you, never a day goes by that I don't learn things!

    2. Angela, I'm too lazy for that. I've sewn sequined and beaded fabric and I've never felt the need to remove the ones in the seam allowance. If I break a needle, I replace it and keep going.
