Review: McCall's 7257 | Faux Fur Gilet!

7:30 AM

I've been wanting to work with faux fur and I'm so glad that McCall's 7257 was released.  It's such an easy pattern, with limited seams to work with.
I cut the size medium and used the length from view D and the hood from view C.  My fabric is this very luxurious Black and White Faux Fur Knit from Mood Fabrics.com.
I had never worked with any kind of fur before, so I had to quickly do research on how to start.  I read that you (obviously) treat fur like you would any fabric with a nap, clearly the fur needs to be point down.  I cut on a single layer, from the backside.  I cut into the backing to completely miss the fur.  You never cut across the fur!  You don't want blunt ends.  It should look natural.  And I trimmed the fur down in the seam allowances so it would be easier to sew.  I used a regular universal size 12 needle.  And yes, it's messy as hell to work with. You'll need almost need a shop vac when you're done!
And what's outerwear without pockets!
Even though I'll never wear the hood, it's a great detail that adds interest.
My lining is a Silver Poly Satin.  The poly looks good, but doesn't feel as luxe as a charmeuse would've.  I wish I'd bought the charmeuse.  Having a little bit of buyer's remorse.  But if I make another one, I'll use it next time.
Overall, I love this new piece.  It's chic, easy to throw on and it'll be worn a lot for this season.

  1. That’s cute as all get out. I don’t really care for fur, I’m trying to think of something else I could make it out of.

  3. LOVE IT!!! I love the color and the hood.
Since I got the sleeves removed from my fur jacket I have worn it more as a vest in the last two years than I've worn it as a jacket in the last 10 years. I've had it 30 years now, and loving it as a vest.

  5. I own a Mimi shop vac. Great for fur, corduroy and any kind of "fuzzy" clean up. And it's small so I keep it in my sewing room. The vest is gorgeous!

It looks great! I saw that pattern and wasn't immediately drawn to it, but yours doesn't look so overwhelming.

  11. Love it, Erica! Yes fur is messy to work with but it's totally worth the trouble.
Today I woke up to 40ºF outside, so it feels like "fur weather" to me already!
