Review: The Trend Patterns Cape!

10:00 AM

This is my second pattern from Trend Patterns and it's called "The Cape". Lucy says that it's the only cape you'll ever want to own! And it's indeed fabulous!
There are four versions to this pattern. There's a shorter length and a super-long dramatic length, and each style has either a front or back zipper.
I chose the shorter length with the front zipper in the size 14.
The style of The Trend Cape is so similar to Marni's Cutout Cape. I really like the casual throw-on-and-go style of it, so I knew I wanted this length.
My fabric is this beautiful Rag & Bone Italian Light Gray Blended Wool Coating from Mood Fabrics.com.
The light gray wool has a slight taupey color. That's why I decided to pair mine with chocolate brown.
The construction of this cape is very simple and it goes together quickly. Trend Patterns is out of the U.K., so they use the Metric System and also industry standard seam allowances, which I love! The cape is unlined and the seams are felled.
And it also has front and back facings.
I used a sports zipper for mine. I think it looks great open or closed.
The drama queen in me wanted to go with the long length. But sometimes I have to reel myself back in and be practical. I know that at this length, I'll want to reach for it often.
Since our ice storm, the weather here has been really mild. It's warm in the daytime (when we're not having torrential downpours) and chilly at night. So this is the perfect thing to reach for to keep the chill at bay. I know have another simple, easy-to-sew piece that packs a seriously stylish punch for my wardrobe!

I've wanted a cape for a long time - this year must be it. Have to wait for the weather to cool down in Australia, though.

  4. I'm never sure about capes. Our weather is quite similar to yours -- I often check the weather channel for Atlanta and just add 4-6 hours, for predicting rain or cold. If it is cold enough for a coat, I want the close warmth of a coat -- not the airy bottom of a cape. If it is too hot for a coat, it is too hot for a cape. Also, a cape either traps your arms by your sides, or leaves them exposed to the cold through arm-slits.

I do like this cut-away version that you made! It offers the light warmth of a sweater or shawl, while leaving your arms relatively free. Still think I'll stick to sweaters and shoulderettes, but I like how the cape looks on you.

    1. Capes are one of those things that are an acquired taste -- like raw oysters! Either you love them or you hate them. There's no in between. Thanks LinB!

  5. This is so cool and different. I love that it doesn't look like a traditional cape but a funky cape/shawl. And the long back adds the drama! I just know that you're eventually going to make the full length long back! I can't wait to see what you style it with. :-)

  7. Erica, I really love this cape! I am curious, would the shilouette/dimensions of this cape be suitable for a petite, 5', 1" frame? I want to add a cape to my wardrobe. Thanks any information you may share. Best wishes.

    1. You know I'm practically 6 ft tall, right? I have no experience with petite sizing, at all. Like I do and would advise anyone, I always suggest going into a store and finding something similar and trying it on if you're unsure if it will work for you. Thank you Regina!
