Jumpsuits...

3:45 PM

So, it seems the "hot" discussion in the sewing streets seem to be "Jumpsuits: Yea or Nay"? This is my 3rd one I've made in the last year! So it's no guessing on my stance.

A very brief review, since I made another version of this previously:

McCall's 6083, View C. I used a heather grey cotton/spandex knit that I've had for a while. Made my usual lengthening alterations (1" at the waist and 3" at the hemline).

There are varying opinions on jumpsuits. Especially regarding who *should* be wearing them.

Which brings me to the MOST clichéd sentence in the online sewing community:

"That'll only look good on someone tall and thin."

This is the go-to comment seen in blog posts, blog comments and sewing messageboards (and probably a lot of other fashion sites) for ANYTHING remotely fashionable or trendy. So if you aren't 6'0" tall and a size 00 or have hips, I suggest you relegate yourselves to wearing muumuus. But I'll be wearing a jumpsuit!

  1. Now you make me want to wear a jumpsuit. I swear, if I had your skills I would sew everything! I know I just need more practice but where to even find the time or the energy! Love it, you look great :)

  3. I used to buy into that line of thinking, that jumpsuits would only look good on the supermodel type body. I mean this in the most complimentary way, you have proven this idea WRONG! Your jumpsuit looks AMAZING! Your sewing talent shines through and it looks great on your figure. I applaud you!

  7. This is great...darling for your hot-lanta weather. Layer up for air-conditioning or cool nights outside. I'm thinking if I were to make it...I'd go for bright velour. Chartreuse!

  8. I completely agree with your assessment of jumpsuits!! There's a lot of ways to do a jumpsuit wrong, but I don't see how these ways are any different from how one can make poor decisions when making a dress. Both of your McCall's 6083 jumpsuits look great! Didn't you also make the new Vogue jumpsuit already, too? Yes, I just found the post...you are my jumpsuit heroine! My next sewing project is a jumpsuit. :-)

  10. I love love love this and your other jumpsuits and totally disagree with the "tall and thin" thing. But alas, I won't be making one for myself because I have horrible flashbacks to the jumpsuits of my teens (the 80s) and the tricky thing about bathrooms. Then again, the one you've just made appears to slip down easily, so... maybe.

  11. Thanks for your post. The funny thing is that I used you as my reason for thinking jumpsuits work! Gertie had the "yea or nay" blogpost and I referred to your Vogue jumpsuit. I have made one, but have more in my future as well.

  12. First, you look great!

Second: HA! I KNOW I'm not 6 feet tall OR skinny and I LOVE jumpsuits lol. I also think they look good on me lol.

I made this one last year and plan on making it AGAIN for the spring/summer.

  13. well, I think people develop these limiting beliefs based on what they have been told by main stream media. It doesn't matter if its a jumpsuit, a skinny jeans or a pencil skirt, its not the actual garment but its how it works with your body type and we both know that one "style" does not fit all. You have to find what works for you for whatever you are interested in wearing. There is a jumpsuit for everyone, I would focus more on cut, proportions, type of neckline etc to find the find the perfect one for me..... like everything else I wear :)

  14. I just saw a pattern for a Romper, I used to love those when I was a teenager! A jumpsuit in shorts form LOL... I love them! It was the new romper out by oh shoot the new Simplicity line. Okay I am drawing a blank now. Suede line 2222 that was it.. I want that pattern!

I think your romper is very nice and looks great on you!

  15. I think the word "tall" is relative! I think you're tall. To me any one over 5' 5" is tall! I think jumpsuits do look best on taller women (taller based on my definition). My 5' 1/2" figure would not look good in a jumpsuit, IMHO. But overall, you're right, I think it isn't a good idea to categorically rule out a certain type of garment based on a body type/shape/size.

I think it's more about matching the style to your body type, there are alot of jumpsuit variations out there just like there are alot of body types. You also have to make sure it fits properly too, I think that's the problem most of the time.

  17. Well if I looked as good as you do in a jumpsuit I would wear one too!!! I haven't worn a jumpsuit in years, but the ones you have made are simply divine!

  18. Erica, your jumpsuit looks so stylish and yet elegantly conformtable too - great work :)!

  19. You look amazing Erica! You're skills are definitely top notch! You inspired me to do this jumpsuit and I'm very proud of myself for completing it as this is the 3rd garment I made.

  22. I like strapless jumpsuits. They don't work for my life, but that's because I'm here in Boston where it was windy and didn't get out of the 40s today. I may make one for vacation this year, because I think they are a great look to toss on over a bikini.

    That one is great, BTW!

  23. You look amazing in the jumpsuit. I'm not sure the jumpsuits are a favorite of mine. Haven't added them to my wish list, but if you continue to make cute jumpsuits like this I could be swayed. The cold weather up here doesn't help entice one to sew for summer at the moment.

  24. You look great! I can't get over the material. I thought it was a satin or something other than a knit. It hangs beautifully. After I finish some of my other projects; I am planning on trying my hand at a jumpsuit for me, not my daughters. lol

  25. I made a lime green cotton jumpsuit back in the '80's. I really liked it but can't see me wearing one now. Just not my style or lifestyle. You look great in yours though.

  27. you look gorgeous!
I don't think the problem is the size, for jump suits or other items, but the way you wear them. And the way you make them fit. In my opinion, YOU can wear anything you want, you know how to make a piece that fits you, and you are always pampered. As a consequence, you look great.

  28. You look great in this jumpsuit! The strapless loook really suits you. I'm permanently scarred by the jumpsuit with many many buttons, I made in 1976! It loooked lovely but took ages to get out of.

  29. I'm a yay to jumpsuits BUT They just don't suit my big bottomed, short legged figure. I agree you don't have to be over 6' and a size 0 but figure proportion does help - something you have Erica. As ever, you look stunning!

  30. Great jumpsuit and now has me rethinking the whole garment. I love the way you show elegance can be comfortable and wearable in day to day clothes. Hope you realize you write an educational blog.

  31. Looks great on you. Tall and thin my eye. The wider legs on some styles are perfect for those of us blessed with hips.

  32. You look great Erica!! I have to tell you that I was in the definite 'nay' camp until I saw your versions and now I'm a 'yay'. Funny though, because I'm one of those tall(er) and skinny-types and I hesitate making a jumpsuit because I think it will make me look stick-like instead of accentuate what little (ha!) curves I have.

I love your jumpsuits, especially the last two - I must have one!

  34. Isn't is something how often that comment is made. And I don't think it applies. People don't need to be "tall" and reed thin to wear a lot of looks. I love your jumpsuits! Very pretty and elegant.

  35. I was not sure about jumpsuit... but this one is gorgeous and you look amazing in it! Bravo! You make me want to sew one for myself...

  37. You can keep right on wearing jumpsuits because you look beautiful and so confident. This one looks very elegant.

Love the looks into what you are sewing and you have given me hope that maybe I could wear a jumpsuit, and trust me I'm not 6'0 and size 00.

  38. I'll agree that not everyone looks good in a jumpsuit. You, however, do!

  39. You look great in your jumpsuit. For me at only 5'3" I'm constantly saying nay... but thinking just maybe...

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am 5'2". I have worn jumpsuits for years. In fact, I have two pattern ready to cut out on my cutting table.
I feel rather slim in them, and do get compliments when I wear them. But, they do need to fit well. Being on the short side, I slim down the leg a little.
Yours look so nice on you...wish I could wear strapless, but my old arms just don't make the cut!

I love that... you are changing my mind about jumpsuits. It looks so beautiful on you!

  42. I'm no supermodel. What keeps me from wearing a jumpsuit like this is: a) floppy upper arms (yours look great); b) lack of a good strapless bra. My girls are generously built (and are probably partly to blame for the floppy arms) and no one has yet engineered a strapless bra that actually defies gravity and doesn't require constant tugging upward (the bras that go down to the waist don't count--too hot for summer).
You look fantastic in this style!

Erica! Thought you might want to check out Simplicitys vintage jumpsuit 5570 on ebay. Type in vtg 70's jumpsuit sewing pattern...the yellow one on you would look gorge!

  52. It's funny, I don't think of the "only the tall and thin can wear jumpsuits", they are stylish! The only worry I have is if I have to rush to the bathroom when wearing one... that's enough to stop me from sewing one. ;p

    ReplyDelete
  53. meli88a,

This going to the bathroom thing is kind of ridiculous to me. This jumpsuit strapless. It's easier to get down than undoing a belt and a pair of jeans. And since we do sew, it would make the MOST sense to just add a zipper here or there. But if jumpsuits aren't your taste, trust -- I'm not advocating! LOL It's simply something I like!

  57. The jumpsuit looks fabulous on you. The folks that said this would only look good on tall and thin didn't know what they were talking about.

I've worn jumpsuits in the past and got a lot of compliments. Mind you I'm 5'4 and a size 16/18. I was trying to figure out what to make for my first sewing project for my birthday and I think I'm gonna try a jumpsuit.
