What I'm Wearing | Bouclé dress + Leather bomber

Today was a perfect Autumn day and it came just in time for Thanksgiving.
Today, I ran last minute Thanksgiving Day errands (i.e. picked up my wine - a Malbec, Viognier and Chenin Blanc; turkey brine; a new white table cloth and cash money for some Black Friday shopping).  A lot of people get carried away with sale prices on the day after Thanksgiving sales.  I have learned to be disciplined.  I set a budget, withdraw cash from the bank and when that money is gone, the shopping ends.  No debt to pay off.  It works for me.
Today, I pulled out my bouclé dress, a fitted black turtleneck, BCBG suede boots and a leather bomber.  I decided to wear the dress as a jumper instead of underneath a cardigan as I did last year.
We have so much to be thankful for... we are truly blessed.  And tomorrow I'm going to celebrate and get my eat on with those that I love the most!

What I'm Wearing | Black + White

Other than the obvious, the thing I hate most about our Fall tornado season is the humidity (wreaks havoc on my hair) and the high temperatures.  If it's fall, I'd like it to actually feel like fall.
To match the unseasonably warm temps, I pulled out my linen tunic, last seen here.  I layered it over a sequined tank from Arden B.  I knotted the tunic in the front for fun this time.
I think the rule of no white after Labor Day and before Memorial Day are pretty antiquated.  I've opened my mind to breaking a few rules, ESPECIALLY when the weather dictates it.
And wore it with my favorite black pants and Steven Madden Wedges.  I really need to make another pair of these pants before I wear these out. And I added my cobalt blue leather clutch for a pop of color!

What I'm Wearing | Burnt Orange V-neck + Gray Wool Pants

So I've been looking at pants patterns, because I'm always out to find the next great pattern.  I love the yellow pants I made, but that pattern took some tweaking.  The fit through the thighs were not as fitted as I'd have liked.  I wanted pants that were fitted through the hips, thighs and flared at the knee.  And that's what I tried to achieve with the alterations I made to that Simplicity pattern.
I week ago, I was perusing Net-A-Porter.com (my FAVORITE site for retail inspiration) and saw these great Stella McCartney pants:

And I thought, "Wow, I need a pair of grey pants like these!"  And then it clicked:  I already have a pair!  It's sad to forget what you in your own closet.  SMH...
These are the famous Vogue 1051 pants that everyone that sews has pretty much made.

I took a modicum of inspiration from the Net-A-Porter.com styling and added a bright sweater (I prefer v-necks), Ralph Lauren chocolate brown suede ankle boots and my cognac colored leather hobo from Steve Madden.
Lesson learned:  I already had what I've been looking for.  This goes for a TNT pants pattern and life!

Simplicity 1972 - Metallic Sweater

Worn with Banana Republic skinny cargos; Guess Boots and clutch from The Limited.  Bracelets from Aldo Shoes and Forever 21.

I've been seeing a lot of metallic sweaters this season.  And they're not just for festive holiday wear.  I used Simplicity 1972 for this one.
The instructions were really simple as the name suggests.  But here is the thing:  it's simple as in an experienced sewist can zoom right through this project.  But I don't want to give the impression that a beginner would sew it as quickly.

I really like the sleeves and this top was perfect for our unseasonably low temps today.  I didn't have to worry about the dolman/kimono sleeves bunching up in coat sleeves.  That's my only concert with wearing a top like this during cold weather.
For the gathering in the sleeves I used clear elastic and I decided to not make the belt.

What I'm Wearing: Black + Pink + Polka Dots!

Tonight was family night.  We went to the movies to see "Breaking Dawn:  Part 1".  We're fans of the "Twilight" series and we loved it!  Can't wait until part 2!
Tonight I wore my pink Vogue 1264 ciggies with my black and white polka dot silk chiffon blouse underneath a black v-neck sweater.  I added my Missoni for Target pumps and my Donna Karan black wool felt cape.  And my leopard print belt, just because.   It's currently one of my favorite things!
I did manage to get a "quick" project sewn earlier today.  It was a quick little dress that I can wear for date night with the husband.  I'll be posting pictures soon!

What I'm Wearing Today...

I've been feeling really crappy all week with a migraine that would not let up.  I believe the cause of it was do to the low barometric pressure.  We had nasty tornado weather yesterday.  It was warm, humid and dreary.  The temperature dropped last night and created a beautiful fall day.  I decided that the sun and brisk air was best for what ailed me.
I wore my black, slim-fit Simplicity 2315 pants, with a Missoni for Target t-shirt, Gap denim jacket and Steve Madden wedges.
I love the zipper details of my pants.  And this is the first time I've worn these shoes for an entire day and they're extremely comfortable.
Even though everything in me said to stay home and "take to the bed", I got dressed and got out (and bought some sale patterns... hehe!).  Sun and retail therapy... it's good for what ails you!

McCall's 2255 - Silk Crepe de Chine Midi Skirt!

So, which comes first -- the fabric or the pattern?  Well, in this case the fabric came first.  I saw this beautiful silk crepe print in Hancock.  I bought 3 yards and hadn't a clue as to what I would do with it.  I draped it over my dress form for a few days and I decided that it would look great as a maxi skirt.
You notice I said "MAXI" skirt, right?  Right.  Well... the not so best laid plans often go awry.  See, the pattern pieces for this skirt are cut on the bias.  Well, that was just not going to happen for 45" wide fabric.
I had to shorten the pattern pieces to "midi" length so that they would fit the fabric.  And since this is silk crepe, I cut on the floor which I NEVER do.  It was easier to cut the flat fabric that way.
I used McCall's 2255, view A, minus the side slit.  I used French seams since this is silk and a narrow hem.  I used 1" elastic for the waist because that's what I had in my stash.  And as with any bias cut garment, I let it hang overnight before hemming.
I love this skirt already and I've only worn it this once.  But I can see the possibilities of pairing it with other items in my wardrobe and wearing it also during Spring and Summer with a great pair of sandals.
When you have a fabric that you love, sometimes you only need a pattern/design with simple lines.  Let the fabric be the star!

What I'm Wearing: Chunky Knits + Fall layering!

This is one of my favorite Fall RTW pieces that I've purchased this season.
It's a chunky knit belted cocoon cardigan from BCBG Max Azria.  It's warm enough to wear as a coat on moderately cool days.
I layered my cardigan over my Butterick 5526 white shirt that I made last Fall.  And my recently sewn McCall's 6404 black skinny pants/leggings that I can't get enough of!  Seriously, I need to make another version (or 2) of those pants.
And I added in a pair of gray Guess boots that were gifted to me from my son last year.  It was a beautiful day to be outside enjoying the gorgeous weather!

What I'm Wearing: Lady-like + Sparkle!

Today, the weather was beautiful but warm.  You always know a storm is on it's way when it's 75 degrees this time of year.  Even though it felt more like Spring, I still wanted to dress in Autumn clothes.

Today, I wore my Vogue 8424, DVF-inspired box pleated skirt.  Normally I would have worn this skirt with boots for true 1970's vintage flair.  But since it was really warm today, I went with my calf hair leopard print slingback kitten heels.
I wore it with my Banana Republic sequined tank and a cardigan from a store called Windsor similar to this one that I discovered while roaming the mall in Phoenix.
And I added my favorite set of stacked Amrita Singh bangles, my ASOS claw bracelet, rings, earrings from Forever 21 and my leather crossbody bag.

Inspired by Pinterest: Black sweater + Yellow pants + leopard-print belt

Here's my look for today.  I had pinned a similar look from Net-a-Porter.com weeks ago.  And I knew as soon as the weather allowed, I'd be recreating my own verson.

I made a couple of edits to my look:  It just wasn't cool enough for a turtleneck today, so I went with a v-neck sweater.  And I left it untucked.  Also, instead of a black (furry) bag, I wanted a pop of color so I used my red bag.

My Simplicity pants have become one of my favorites.  The color is so cheerful and they make me happy from simply wearing them.

What I'm Wearing: Military Jacket + Denim Skirt

I revisited an oldie but goodie!  It's McCall's 5190, my military jacket that I made 3 1/2 years ago!  I still love it and I've been wearing it every season since!
The high-low skirt is ABS by Allen Schwartz that I've had for eons.  The orange tank was last seen here.
The boots are Sam Edelman and the bag is from Urban Outfitters.

As you can tell, Autumn is definitely my favorite season!

McCall's 6400 - Off-the-shoulder Top Online - No Degree of Difficulty

McCall's 6400, view B is one of the easiest and QUICKEST tops I've ever made!  Front and back, from the same pattern piece and BOOM!  You're done!  I cut the extra large because I wanted a lot of drape and "off-the-shoulderness".

The brown top which I wore for date night is made in a rayon/spandex that I picked up from Jo-Anns.  And the gray top that I wore the next day for lunch is in a cotton/blend t-shirt knit that I found at Hancock.

I highly recommend this top for anyone who wants to add cute, quick and trendy pieces to their wardrobe.  You won't feel like you need an online degree to make or style this piece!

What I'm Wearing: Tweed, sparkle and suede

I'm considering time to time to post things from my closet that I've sewn... that I actually wear daily!  And also how I mix them in with RTW!

Here is my Vogue 8601 tweed riding jacket that I made 2 years ago!
I was always a fan of the cut of the jacket with the tails.  And I love that I decided to add the suede details to the collar and the elbow patches.
I wore it with a sequin tank for a little daytime sparkle and a pair of mustard suede pants that I've had in my closet for years.  And a pair of brown suede and ponyhair leopard loafers.
